About

Established in 1981, the Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities (AS&H) forms the academic foundation of engineering education at the institute. The department plays a pivotal role in bridging core scientific principles with professional engineering disciplines by offering comprehensive instruction in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English, and Environmental Science to all first-year engineering students.

The department currently caters to an intake of 1020 first-year students across various branches including Civil, CSE, CSE (AI & ML), Data Science, IoT, CSIT, ECE, EEE, Mechanical Engineering, and IT. It is supported by a strong team of 39 experienced faculty members, including 26 doctorates, along with 11 dedicated supporting staff, all committed to fostering analytical thinking, scientific reasoning, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills among students.

Beyond academics, the department actively contributes to the holistic development of students by promoting soft skills, ethical values, interdisciplinary learning, and critical thinking. A wide range of workshops, seminars, value-added courses, and student enrichment programs are regularly organized to enhance the overall learning experience and prepare students for the challenges of professional life.

The department is equipped with well-established laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, English Language Skills, MATLAB, and Computer Programming, housed across both academic blocks to ensure accessibility and an optimal learning environment. Faculty members are actively engaged in research and scholarly activities, with publications in reputed national and international journals. Several faculty have also authored textbooks and contributed to NPTEL courses, reflecting the department's strong commitment to academic excellence and lifelong learning.

Through a balanced blend of rigorous academics, skill development, and research orientation, the Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities continues to serve as a cornerstone in shaping competent, responsible, and innovative engineering professionals.
